Extension of the Academy of Fine Arts campus in Katowice
Competition project.
The aim of this study was to create a concept for a building that would expand the campus of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, one that would emphasize the importance and character of the university through its architectural expression. The building is intended to provide a space conducive to the development of young artists and support them in honing their creative skills. The proposed building also serves as a meeting place for students, offering space for exhibitions, artistic events, and various cultural initiatives. It also aims to foster the exchange of experiences with external stakeholders – entrepreneurs, local government units, cultural institutions, etc., to integrate the academic community, and to open up dialogue with the surrounding area. The building’s form stems directly from its function. The outline of the building, its indentations, and overhangs are the result of efforts to maximize the use of the plot’s surface. The building’s aesthetic expression contrasts with the surrounding buildings, which maintain subdued gray, beige, and black colors, while integrating into the context with its dimensions and compactness.
The idea behind the project was to create a building that would serve as a backdrop for art created by the Academy of Fine Arts students, but also one that would itself be a living painting, undergoing constant change. The light and neutral materials used in the interiors and facades provide a suitable backdrop for the diverse works of art, while the mobile glass walls, curtains, and modular, movable furniture give users the freedom to shape the space according to their current needs.
